To conclude here is a miscellany of facts and information about
the Hampshire town of Whitchurch. Enjoy!
- The telephone number of the Town Hall is 01256 892107. Our Town Clerks,
Cathy Burt (xhpcwccb@hants.gov.uk) and
Pat Cooper (xhpcwcpc@hants.gov.uk), have
particularly enjoyed helping people from all over the world tracing their roots
to Whitchurch or with an interest in Whitchurch.
- Charles Kingsley of Water Babies fame stopped at the White Hart.
- James Robertson Justice, the late and well-loved actor, lived in Whitchurch
for a short time.
- Richard Adams of Watership Down fame lives in Whitchurch.
- Watership Down is nearby.
- Ron Eastman, famous wildlife photographer and film maker lived in the the
town.
- The spire of the church of All Hallows weighs 500 tons and is held in place
by its own weight.
- All Hallows houses a fine brass monument to Richard and Elizabeth Brooke
erected in 1603.
- King Charles I, later beheaded at Whitehall, stayed with the Brooke family
in 1644.
- You can feed the trout in the River Test from the bridges in Winchester
Street.
- Lynch Hill Park, a small housing development, was used in a TV advert
because of its "typical" American appearance.
- Many townsfolk have a rich and distinctive Hampshire/Whitchurch accent.
- Despite its diminutive size, Whitchurch has a town council and mayor.
- The centre of the town is a roundabout known as The Square.
- Eccentrics abound!!!!!
